The Beard Transplantation Procedure
Beard transplantation or beard reconstruction are the terms used to facilitate the growth of a beard. The same technique is employed as with a hair transplant to the scalp. The procedure of choice for a beard transplant is the FUE technique. This is a surgical technique undertaken by a trained medical team working with an experienced hair transplant surgeon.
The FUE technique involves extracting hair using a specialised tool called a micro-motor punch. The hair can be taken from the scalp or chest. In your assessment, the doctor will have discussed with you the hair follicles required and where he feels the best viable options are.
The number of hair follicles required is dependent on the density and size of the beard wanted. The extracted follicles are carefully implanted into the beard area. Prior to this, the surgeon makes minute incisions in the target area to make sure the hair grafts will fit. The insertion of the extracted follicles is a delicate process. They have to be inserted at an angle for an optimal natural growth pattern to occur. The process can take up to five hours or more.
It is not a case of just taking any of your hair. The selection is carefully made as the donor hair for your beard needs to have the correct colour and texture to ensure it resembles your original hair and looks natural. The more follicles required, the more difficult the selection can be.
